About CanTeen
CanTeen supports young people aged 12-24 who are living with cancer.
CanTeen is based on the philosophy that no young person should go through their cancer experience alone.
CanTeen was born in 1985 when a number of health professionals realised that the health system was not meeting the unique support needs of adolescents with cancer - and their siblings. The very first CanTeen camp was organised in early 1985 - and the camp format became accepted as the most effective way for young people to get away from their daily cancer experience, have some fun, build relationships and share their experiences with one another. From its humble beginnings in Randwick, Sydney, CanTeen has developed into the Australian Organisation for Young People Living with Cancer that we know today - a place where Members can simply be young people, away from the daily pressures of living with cancer in the hospital or at home.
Everything CanTeen does, from camps and programs to resources and services, is designed to make sure these young people get the strength and support they need. Often this support will come from young people just like them - they call this 'peer support'. Peer support is about connecting young people who are going through the same stuff, so they can help each other and share experiences. This is really important for helping a young person cope with their cancer and make sure they do not have to do it alone.
By supporting National Bandanna Day, you'll be helping CanTeen continue to run camps, services and programs, as well as put together information resources like books, CDs, DVDs and websites that really help young people get through their cancer journey.
